During the month of March, VCE is focusing on the virtue of ‘Unity through Diversity’. On Monday, at the monthly assembly, we will be talking to the students about appreciating everyone for their differences. The students will be finding out from where their ancestors immigrated to Canada and will pin the locations on the big map by the front entrance. As well, we will be hosting a Multicultural Day on Mar 17th. We are asking students to wear their cultural dress, bring a plate of cultural food to share and perform any traditional dance, song or others. We welcome the parents for organizing and participating in the celebration.
For the Pink Shirt Day, the staff and students wore pink to support anti-bullying. As mentioned in the last newsletter, some VCE students were featured in the local Shaw TV program. If you have not seen it, please visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhCjLb3r8BE
Next week, the Gr. 4 students will be participating in the Ministry of Education Satisfaction Survey. A letter explaining the Survey and information about the Parent Satisfaction Survey will be going home soon.
This week, VCE and SWE have been participating in the Musician in Residence Program, Voices of Nature with Holly Arntzen. The students have been working hard so the concerts today should be delightful. Thank you to all the staff for their support. For the evening concert, please drop off the students at VCE by 5:50 pm. After the concert, you can pick up your child at SWE. Any children not picked up at SWE will be bussed to VCE for a pick up in the VCE gym.
Yesterday, the primary students were treated to a wonderful VSO concert. As well, the intermediate students participated in a presentation and a workshop from Free the Children. The focus was on issues of global agriculture and food security in the local and global community. We look forward to offering students these types of opportunities at VCE.
The report cards are going home on Mon, Mar 16th and Early Dismissal and the Parent Teacher interviews are on Thurs, March 19th. You can book your appointments at https://vce.schoolappointments.com/ or by calling the office. On the night of the Parent Teacher interviews, some Gr. 5/6 students will be sharing their first Project Based Learning assignment so you are welcome to pop by the Science room.
On Wed, Mar 18th, VCE students will be participating in the Right to Play program with Quest University students. Right to Play is a global organization that seeks to empower and educate children through the power of play. For more information about Right to Play, see: http://www.righttoplay.com/
The after school activities mentored by HSS students continues to be a success. In March, we have Capture the flag and Origami on Tuesdays and Gym games and Easter crafts on Wednesdays between 3:30 and 4:30 pm. These activities are open to Gr.3 to 6 students.
Don’t forget that Monday is the Cake walk. Tickets are 50 cents each or three for a loonie. We still need more cakes and cupcakes so if you are able to help, please bring the cakes to the Science room on Monday morning. As well, on Wed, it’s the Wacky Hair Day.
