Thinking Globally, Acting Locally

During the past week, VCE had the pleasure of hosting the Missoula Children’s Theatre. The performances of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ were wonderful with thirty eight students in the cast. A huge thanks to Mrs. Jordan for bringing in the MCT. Also a big thank you to the members of the PAC, families, staff and students for their support.

The October assembly on the theme of ‘Thankfulness’ was organized by Mrs. Doherty’s class. It was fantastic to see different classes singing and sharing statements of gratitude. The turkey hats were a big hit!

VCE Cross Country team competed in another inter-school meet at Brennan Park on Tuesday. Twenty students are training at lunch breaks. A big thank you to Mrs. Lock for sponsoring the team. The next meet is at GHE on Tues, Oct 20th at 3:30 pm. The students will be transported by bus.

To keep our staff and students safe, we have a lockdown drill planned for the 19th. We have already had three fire drills and an earthquake drill!

A big thank you to all who bought tickets for the PAC turkey draw. The winner of the draw was Carla Greer and the class that sold most tickets was Mrs. Doherty’s. Funds were raised for the benefit of the students of VCE.

Another school-wide fundraiser is the Purdy’s chocolates sale. The money raised will support the Kenya Tuition Fund from which the students of Nanyuki, Kenya will be sponsored to attend secondary schools. If you would like to help, please send in the order forms in by Nov 6th. To support the Squamish Food Bank, VCE is participating in Halloween for Hunger. Please send non-perishable food items until October 30th. It’s friendly competition among classes to see who can bring in the most cans to support our local food bank. To learn more about global and local issues, Mrs. Nunn’s Gr. 6 students will be joining in the We Day celebrations at Rogers Arena on the 21st. The school will be closed on the 23rd which is a ProD day for the staff.

The PAC meeting has been changed to Oct 26th at 7 pm. We appreciate all the work that the PAC does for our school. New members are always welcome. Child-minding is provided.

Photo retakes will take place on the 27th. On the same day, VCE will be hosting ArtStarts Rock the Arts puppets at 1:30 pm. Please check out: http://rockthearts.ca/

Oct 20th is the ‘Bling Day’. Please help students be as sparkly as possible for our spirit day. On the 30th, the whole school will join in the Halloween parade at 9:30 am. So join us in your costumes and watch the witches, ghosts and goblins in action. Some classes will be going swimming in the afternoon that day.

Finally, the after school sports and arts/crafts sessions got started on Tuesday. The GirlsBoys Club runs on Mondays and Tuesdays between 3:30 to 4:30 pm. It’s open to students in Gr. 3 to 6 and will be run Mondays and Tuesdays with HSSS students mentoring the VCE students.

Thank you for your continued support!
