Flying to the Finish!

The first two weeks of June has flown by!

To start off the month, the students had a great time being mentored by the staff from iRIDE. We thank Cycle BC for providing the volunteers.

We had beautiful weather for the Sports Day. It was a blast! The staff and students had so much fun. The primary students enjoyed: races, friendship races, bean bag and hoop relay, ping pong ball and spoon race, sack race, gumboot relay, dress the captain. The intermediate students were busy with sponge pass, toss and score, jousting and bubble gum blowing. The tug-o-war and egg toss were favorites. To top it off, we were all treated to popsicles. We thank the staff for going the extra mile for the students, again.

On another note, we thank Marley, Kai, Soren, Jacki Willcox, Annika and Alana for their bravery and generosity for shaving and donating their hair for Balding for Dollars. We are happy to report that VCE raised over $2500 toward Childhood Cancer Research.

To help with transition for next year, the Gr. 6 students made a visit to DRS on June 8th. They were most impressed with how big the school was, having different teachers, the lockers and the giant cookies.

Next week, we look forward to hosting the transfer students from SWE on June 16th. We are also holding a family BBQ on June 17th starting at 5:30 pm where families (new and present) are invited to meet and greet with one another. The BBQ will be provided by the school and we are asking families to bring a side dish to share. The new Kindergarten information and transition session will take place just before the BBQ from 4 to 5 pm. You will have a chance to meet with Mrs. Platz and Mrs. Jajic who will be teachers for the Kindies next year.

For a special treat, on Fri, 19th, VCE will be listening to some music by DRS band and VCE Strings. You are most welcome to join us at 11 am.

To thank and bid farewell to Mrs. Lake and Mrs. Pawlett, we are inviting families, friends and colleagues to an assembly and tea on June 23rd – the assembly begins at 2pm and the tea at 3:30 pm in the VCE gym. There will be babysitting service provided. We thank these teachers for their many years of service. Please join us for their send off.

We would like to thank the staff for the numerous fieldtrips this month. They give the students special opportunities for different experiences and to learn off campus.

Also, we would like to thank the PAC for the wonderful Staff and Volunteer luncheon that they provided. We thank the PAC for their service to the school.

The tickets are still on sale for a chance to win a pair of weekend passes to Squamish Live (worth $722). They are on sale in the office for $10 each. The proceeds raised will go toward VCE Strings program and Kenya Tuition Fund. The draw will be on June 25th at 9 am so please buy your tickets ASAP. VCE would like to thank brand.LIVE for donating.

Finally, the last day of classes for students is on the 25th. There will be an assembly at 9 am where we will wrap up the year and say goodbye to our Gr. 6 students. We wish them well at DRS in the fall. After the assembly, there will be report card distribution and an early dismissal.

Feeling the Valleycliffe Love

The month of May has been very busy at VCE and June promises to be as full of events.   A big thank you to all PAC members for putting on the wonderful Carnival. It was a fun-filled night full of games, special effects and great food. We appreciate the time and effort that the parents put toward this fundraiser. As well, a thank you to all staff who helped with decoration, face painting and running of the concession.

We would like to congratulate Mrs. Lake and Mrs. Pawlett on their retirement. We thank them for their years of service. They will be missed at VCE.

Last week, the Skype session went smoothly with the students of HSS, VCE and the students of Nanyuki, Kenya on the topic of endangered species and wildlife conservation. We learned about the Big Five (lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros) and poaching issues. The Kenyan students learned about our whales, bears and owls and habitat loss. They also chatted about school life, hobbies and pop culture in both countries. We hope to have more Skype sessions in the future.

Camp Summit has been a wonderful experience for Mrs. Dawson and Mrs. Doherty’s classes. Students had the opportunity to try new activities in the outdoors to be part of nature, develop strong friendships and build self-confidence. The students tried their hands at archery, field games & sports, high ropes, mountain biking, camp fire and many more. We are sure that the students will remember this experience for a long time to come.

This week, we were treated to a wonderful musical interlude by HSS Concert and Jazz bands thanks to Mrs. Booth and Mr. Olafsson. The students were exposed to different styles of music. We appreciate the many talented musicians from HSS. On June 19th, we are looking forward to being treated to a concert by the DRS band and VCE Strings.

Starting Monday, the students will be mentored by the staff from iRIDE. The students should bring their bikes and helmets from Monday to Thursday. You can check out for more information at: http://cyclingbc.net/youth/iride-school-program/
