Weekly Update!!

Happy Friday VCE Families!

Hard to believe we are getting so close to the end of the 2020-2021 school year! Students are continuing to be engaged in ongoing learning tasks and projects while we wrap up the year! The garden is in full swing and we are so grateful for all the work that has gone into it.

VCE Curriculum Update:

Looking for something to do on the weekend? How about engaging in our collaborative "What is Beauty?" school challenge?

Collaborative Challenge:

What is Beauty?

Show us in words or art what you see as beautiful. It could be words to a song, a quote, a description of something, or simply a word! You could also show the beauty through a picture or painting! Really any way you want to represent beauty! Can you think outside of the box to look at what beauty is?

Families can submit their beauty pieces to the office by June 18th to go on our collaborative board for everyone to see and enjoy! Let’s see how much beauty we can get up on our display!

Getting ready for summative reports:

With our MyEd Parent Portal up and running, we no longer send home paper copies of reports. Of course if there are families that can’t access the online information, please let your child’s teacher know you will need a paper copy. You will have access to your child’s report for 3 weeks on the day they go live –June 29th, 2021 to July 20th, 2021. You will have the option to save or print if you so choose.

You would have received email instructions from Scott McLagan in Term 1 with log-in specifics for your MyEd Parent Portal account. If you have forgotten or can’t find your log in information please contact our district MyEd support, here: [email protected]. Please save this information for future use.

Class Placement Process for 2021-2022 School Year:

As we near the end of the school year, I would like to take a moment to share with you the approach we will be taking for our Class Placement Process for the 2021-2022 school year.

Class placement is a thoughtful process that is not completed until early September when exact student populations and staff members are known. To begin the process however, it is important to have as much information as possible.  If your family is not returning to Valleycliffe Elementary School in September, please inform the school office at 604-892-9394 as soon as possible.

The placement process ensures that thoughtful consideration of each child’s social, emotional and intellectual strengths are aligned with the need to create balanced and effective learning environments that honour student diversity.

It is important to note that the placement of each child to a class is made by a team that includes: the child’s current classroom teacher(s) as well as our Learning Support Teachers and the school Principal. This professional team considers each placement carefully as they create groupings rich in diversity. In addition to individual circumstances, criteria considered in the placement process include:

  • Balanced instructional groups: considering academic needs and strengths, teaching/learning styles and work habits.
  • Positive social groups considering: supportive peer groupings, positive leaders

Our philosophy is based on a strength-based approach, considering all aspects of student learning including a child’s capacity to self-regulate, to collaborate, think critically, be creative, and the students’ general academic, social and emotional strengths and needs.

If there is information that the current classroom teacher and/or the principal does not have and that we should consider when placing your child in a class for next year, please put this information in writing and submit by email to Ms. Hain by June 18th ([email protected]).

In your letter or email, please clearly indicate the educational, child-centered rationale for your request. Letters that you provide will be shared with the team during the class placement process in June and September. It is important for parents to understand that such information will be considered as one factor alongside the criteria stated above.

Please do not request a specific teacher as class and teacher assignments often change over the summer. Letters requesting a specific teacher will not be considered

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
